Open Day

We are delighted to invite you to MLC’s Open Day on October 20th and an online Q&A session on October 25th.   Information about both events is below!  Please RSVP for both events as soon as you know that you can and wish to attend.

What to expect from the Open Day

Our intention and aim is to provide young people with an opportunity to experience a condensed version of a day at MLC, so they can sense into whether it aligns with their values, desires, goals, preferences and interests.  Simultaneously, the young people’s parents and carers will be invited to be present as active witnesses, observers, and to follow the young folks’ leads.  Caitlin and Joana will be focusing their attention and energy on facilitating and holding space for the young people’s experiences in the sessions, and Sophie will serve as our primary point of contact, dialogue- and connection-keeper, with and among the adults.  We will hold two two-hour-long open day sessions, hoping that everyone who is interested can make it to one of them.  The sessions will be conducted in a consent-based and self-directed manner.  All people will be responsible for choosing how they participate and for respecting the choices and boundaries of all other participants.

Open Day Location

The Bungalow Youth Project

Victoria Park Lodge

Plymouth Road

TQ11 0AB

The Bungalow Youth Project building is next to Victoria Woodholme Car Park, and it will cost £1.70 to park for the duration of an open day session.

What to bring

Please make sure everyone has clothing that allows them to be both indoors and outdoors and to move comfortably.  Please bring snacks, flasks, and whatever anyone in your party needs in order to feel comfortable in themselves. Please invite the young people in your care to bring an ‘offering’ if they wish.  An ‘offering’ is an invitation to others, an idea/game/activity that they would like to invite other people’s participation in.  Within the context of the open day structure and time constraints, this could be a short game, a show and tell sharing, some music they are enjoying or something else that can take place within an hour and that they feel willing to lead.  Caitlin and Joana will make offerings as well, so please know that this is a genuine invitation, not a demand, and we really don’t want any young people to feel any pressure around this at all.

Plan for the open day sessions

Each session will last for two hours; the first from 10am-12pm, and the second from 1pm-3pm.  Please plan to attend one session only.  The structure for both sessions is as follows:

15 minutes: Be welcomed by Sophie, Caitlin and Joana as you arrive, settle in, familiarise yourselves with the space(s)

15 minutes:  Opening Circle, check-in, sharing and explanation of offerings

1 hour: Self-directed, consent based time for people to engage in the offerings of their choice (or not), to meet people, explore, do what they wish (with respect for everyone else and the environment)

15 minutes: Closing circle

15 minutes: Q&A.  During this time we will ask the young people for their questions about Maverick Learning Community.  If time allows, adults may participate in this as well.

Online Q&A Meeting Info

When and Where

Tuesday, 25 October, 7-8pm via Zoom.

The Q&A session, while open to people of all ages, is designed to centre the adults and their questions.  This will be a great opportunity to discuss everything from daily practicalities, fees, term times, and accessibility to the philosophies and theories underpinning our work. Joana, Sophie and Caitlin will be there to spend time with you and respond to all the questions that arise.  We will send the Zoom link by email closer to the time.

How to RSVP

Please email us at indicating the following:

– which open day session will you attend on 20 October?

– how many people will be in your group/family?

– is there anything you want us to know in advance?

We are really looking forward to spending time with you soon, and we really hope that you are able to join us in-person and on Zoom in the coming weeks.  Please get in touch with any questions you may have.
